In math this week, we began to explore our math manipulatives (what we call 'math tubs'). Here are some students exploring the materials in this math tub. Without any prompting, I see patterns, sorting, counting and shapes being made!
In language arts, we started our reading groups rotation. While students are getting into the routine we are practicing some basic following directions and letter knowledge skills.

In unit study, we learned about what citizens and communities are. We learned how we can be good citizens in our community. We got a special treat Wednesday afternoon when Celeste Kellogg came to visit our school and sing some songs with her group, The Pop Rock Band. Celeste wants to spread the message of "Be a friend. Not a bully." The students LOVED dancing along while she sang.

Looking forward....
Next week we will learn about position words in math. Our main focus will be using the vocabulary "above," "below" and "next to."
In language arts we will continue to learn about letters and sounds and rhyming words. We will also continue to learn how to write in our journals.
In unit study, we will begin our focus on community helpers. We will be learning all about the different jobs grown ups have and why they work at their jobs.
Please continue to help your child practice his/her lunch number and bus or pickup number. Also, make sure you are reading with your child for 20 minutes a night. Thank you for your continued help and support!
