Week of Learning

This week started off with a bang!  After having Monday off for Veteran's Day, the students were excited to come back Tuesday to celebrate The 50th Day of School. 


50's Day was lots of fun.  We began our day by having a bubble blowing contest. 

Most of the students were not quite able to master the art of bubble blowing yet. 

 

She did though!! :)

Then, we had a sock hop in the hallway while we listened to 50s music. 

We learned the twist, the mashed potato and the bunny hop! 

In the afternoon, we learned that the movie Cinderella was made in the 50s so we watched it while we had root beer floats (a favorite fifties snack). 


 

This week, in math, we learned a lot about the number 50.  We also continued to practice identifying, counting and making sets of the teen numbers.  Here are some students making a set of the number I projected on the wall.  



In language arts, we focused on the letter Ff.  We also added to our word wall the sight words: I, am, for.  We continued to make GREAT connections to the stories we were reading.  Some students made text to self connections, some made text to text.  We even had some students make text to world connections which we haven't even learned about yet! :)

In unit study, we discussed past, present and future.  We focused especially on how things are different today than they were long ago.  We learned a lot about the 1950s, and also about times even before that. 

Looking forward....

Next week in math, we will be gathering data using tally marks and then using our data to make a graph.  We will also analyze our data by reviewing our graph. 

In language arts, we will be focusing on the letter Aa.  We will add new sight words (and, as, all) to our word wall.  We will also begin to try to make text to world connections.  We will be reading many books by the author Rosemary Wells, especially Max and Ruby books. 

In unit study, we will learn about Pocahontas and Powhatan.  Learning about these two important Native Americans will lead us into a discussion about the first Thanksgiving and why we celebrate this holiday.
