Playing Catch Up

As soon as we returned from Spring Break, we go the treat of seeing a performance of "The Jungle Book" put on by the Virginia Stage Company. 


 
 
 
Later on that week, we got to see a gardening program by the Virginia Botanical Garden. 
 
 
 
 
In math, we have begun our unit about addition and subtraction.  We are really doing a lot of practice with putting sets of items together and taking them apart.  Soon, we will be ready to start writing addition and subtraction sentences. 

Here we are playing the "Monkeys on a tree game" where we draw two numbers and count our total number on the tree:

 
 

And here is the "Double-sided Counter Drop where we count how many yellow and red counters we get in order to make ten:
 
 Here is a game called Squish It:  We roll out ten small balls of play dough and squish the number we roll on a die.  Then, we count and see how many are left:

 

 

In language arts, we focused on the letters Yy and Zz.  We are still reading fiction and non-fiction and comparing the two.  One week we read books about Franklin the turtle and then books about real turtles and compared the two.  The next week, we read fictional and non-fiction books about outer space.  The students are really fascinated by the non-fiction books and their many "fun facts."  They love learning new things!

In unit study we discussed Earth Day, ways to help our Earth by reducing, reusing and recycling.  We also learned about the difference between living and non-living things.  We learned that living things need air, water and food.  They grow and change and reproduce. 

 Next week.....

In math we will be continuing addition and subtraction, by beginning to write number sentences (3+2=5, etc.).

In language arts we will focus on the letter Uu.  We will read books about lullabies and sleeping.  We will also begin to use the reading comprehension strategy: Questioning. 

In unit study we will be beginning our unit about plants and how they grow.
