Week Before Spring Break

We had a busy and fun week before breaking for Spring Break. 

In math this week, we reviewed many topics that we've covered during the past 9 weeks, such as graphing.  Here we are graphing jelly beans (yum!):

 

In language arts we focused on the letter Xx.  We read more fiction and non-fiction, and discussed features of both.  

We read one nonfiction book called Tillie Lays an Egg and then made our own eggs with chicks peering out:
  
 
 

We read a fictional story called The Easter Egg and then decorate our own eggs and wrote about them:

 

We also continued to practice writing sentences:

 

My dad is in work.  My mom is working.

In unit study, we discussed Spring and the changes we've seen happening to the Earth.  What a perfect time for our classroom caterpillars to make a chrysalis and then turn into butterflies!  We observed them all week and fed them sugar water.  On Friday, we set them free so that they could find their own food during Spring Break.

When we came back in, we were able to observe what was left of the chrysalis up close:

 

On Friday we also got to have our classroom egg hunt.  Here are the little bunnies searching for eggs:

This week in math we will begin building a foundation for addition and subtraction.  We will be creating sets of numbers and adding to the sets or taking away from the sets.  We will not necessarily be using the words "add" and "subtract" yet.  We will not be writing number sentences yet either.

In language arts this week we will be focusing on the letter Yy.  We will be reading fictional stories about Franklin the turtle and comparing them to non-fiction books about turtles.

In unit study this week we will be talking about Earth Day (April 22nd) and what it means to take care of the Earth (reduce, reuse, recycle).
