Gingerbread Week

This week was a lot of fun! We enjoyed a gingerbread theme for a lot of our learning activities. 

In math, we made a gingerbread man glyph.  (This is taken from the word hieroglyphics)  When we make a glyph, we are using pictures to tell a story.  Our gingerbread men had pink eyes if we were a girl and blue if we were a boy.  They had a purple nose if we had brothers and sisters and a red nose if we had none.  They had the same number of buttons as years we were old.  Then, we were able to analyze the data about our class by looking at the glyphs.  

 After reading one version of the gingerbread man, we also graphed our favorite characters.  Students colored in a picture of their favorite, and then placed it accordingly on the graph.  It was really interesting to see the students discuss where the pictures should be placed. 

 After reading another gingerbread man version, we found a note from the gingerbread man!  He invited us to look for him in the school.  Here we are getting ready to go look!

He led us on a hunt for him throughout the school, leaving clues in various places. 

 

When we finally gave up on catching him and returned to the classroom, we found gingerbread cookies waiting for us!  We made tally marks each time we took a bite to count how many bites it took to eat our cookie.  

In Language arts we read lots of different versions of the traditional gingerbread man tale.  Then, we discussed similarities and differences by using this chart.

 
In unit study, we abandoned the gingerbread theme for a few days to learn about other holiday traditions.  After learning about Hannukah, the students practiced playing the dreidle game. 

 Friday was the culminating event in our classroom.  We had several gingerbread stations set up to enjoy.  We painted with gingerbread paint:

And we made beautiful gingerbread houses!  What a fun week!

This week....

In math we will be reviewing many of the topics we have covered so far this year (numbers, ordinals, graphing, tallying, patterning, etc.)

In language arts we will be focusing on the letter Ii.  We will learn the sight words: into, his, did.  We will also continue to practice making predictions about what we read.

In unit study we will be discussing the season of winter!
