A Week of Learning!

This room was full of learning and fun for our classroom! 

On Tuesday morning, we prepared for our upcoming chorus concert by performing for the 1st graders in a rehearsal.  Here we are all lined up and ready to go (excited!).

In math this week, we learned all about the four main coins (penny, nickel, dime, quarter).  The students had some good background knowledge about these coins already, so it has been a good practice for them to practice things like sorting the coins:




We do get quarter and nickel mixed up occasionally, so let your child have some hands on experience with these coins especially at home if possible.

In reading this week, we focused on the letter Jj.  We continued to summarize fictional stories and compare and contrast fiction/non-fiction. 

In our reading groups, a big hit this week was playing Go Fish.  Some groups played alphabet Go Fish and some played sight word Go Fish.  The students were quite the card sharks! :) 

In unit study this week, we began learning about maps.  The students really enjoyed looking at google maps online.  Some even knew their addresses and we were able to look them up.  The students thought it was hilarious to look up my house as well!  Who knew a teacher could live somewhere!? :)

In math we will continue to expand upon our knowledge of coins, particularly counting groups of coins.  Kindergarten standards say that students must be able to count groups of coins up to 10 cents.  Sometimes this is harder than it seems when it comes to mixing nickels and pennies. 

In reading, we will be focusing on the letter Vv and reading more fiction/non-fiction stories. 

In unit study, we will continue our study of maps and models.  We will talk more about globes this week.
