We also finished our unit about water. The culmination of the unit was an experiment about what sinks and what floats. We did this activity as a class, and then table groups got to experiment on their own. They love this activity and are learning so much by learning using a hands-on approach.
In language arts we focused on the letter Ll. We learned the sight words: will, look, see, run. We learned about characters and why they are important in a story. We also found examples of characters in the books we read. This sparked interesting discussions: "Can food be a character?" "Do characters have to talk?" I love the inquiring minds of kindergarteners. We also began our new student of the day rotation. This time each student gets to bring a show and tell object and the other students draw and write about it. We've added all students first, middle and last names to the word wall now, so this time they get to choose any word they want to add. So far, we've added a student's brother's name, "princess" and "Elsa." I can't wait to see what other words they come up with.
In math we learned all about the tools used for measuring weight, length, temperature and time. We got chances to explore these measuring tools during math stations.

In unit study we will be learning about light and shadows. This will lead perfectly into Groundhog's Day which is coming up soon.
In language arts we will not be focusing on a letter. Instead, we will focus on the three digraphs we expect kindergarteners to know: "ch," "sh," and "th." There will not be new sight words this week. We will still be finding out more about characters. This week we will also discuss setting.
In math we will be learning about temperature. We will learn what temperature means, what is means if something is hot or cold, and what we use to measure temperature.
