Week 21

 Send in those boxtops!  We are not in last place, but we are pretty close.  We need more!

 
In unit study this week, we finished our unit on shadows.  The kids had fun making some interesting characters from aluminum foil and then tracing the shadow they made.  If you saw some creations come home on orange or pink posterboard, that's why!

In math this week, we completed our unit on length.  We worked especially hard at measuring the length of objects using non-standard units of measurement (cubes, inchworms, paperclips, etc.)

In small group we played several games to work on our ability to subitize (recognize how many are in a set automatically), by rolling dice.  This game is called roll and cover.  Students take turn rolling the dice and coloring the represented number.  If there are no more of that number on the board, they lose a turn and the other player gets a chance.  At the end, we count to see who has the greater number of circles colored. 

 This game, called race to the middle is a similar idea.  Students take turns rolling a dice.  Whoever is on the star with that number moves forward a space.  The student who reaches the middle first wins!

In unit study we will begin learning about some famous Americans in our country's history.  Pocahontas, Chief Powhatan, Betsy Ross, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr. are the famous Americans we will be focusing on. 

In math, we will be focusing on temperature and how it is measured.  We will learn the difference between hot/cold. 

In language arts, we will focus on the letter Nn.  Our sight words are: and, went, on.  We will be reading stories by Robert Munsch and reviewing the characters, setting and events in the story.
