Week 1

What an exciting and BUSY first week of school.  So busy, I forgot to take a lot of pictures ;).

In language arts, we began to build our reading routines.  Every morning, we have a morning meeting  where we can greet our classmates.  Here we are greeting one another to the song "Hello Friend."

Next, we read a morning message.  Then, I read a book out loud to the students.  One of our favorites this week was Pete the Cat.  We read LOTS of Pete the Cat books.  We also learned that there are many ways to read books: read the words, read the pictures and tell a story.  We even began reading independently.  We read for 3 minutes two days in a row!  That is awesome!  

In math, we learned about the appropriate way to use all of our supplies.  Here we are using many of our tools (scissors, glue, pencil, crayon) to create Pete the Cat: 

In unit study (science/social studies), we learned that citizens are part of a community.  We learned how to be good citizens by making good choices and being kind and helpful.

Looking forward to next week...

In language arts, we will continue to build upon our reading routines.  Our goals will be to strive for more independent reading time, identify each child's reading level, begin to write as a group and individually and start small reading groups to work on specific skills.

In math, we will learn about sorting.  Our goal is to be able to sort objects in many different ways such as by size, by shape and by color.  We also will be able to identify how a set of objects are sorted.  We will also work on building our number sense in small math groups.

In unit study, we will continue to learn about being good citizens.  Some topics we will focus on are sharing, taking turns, being honest, being responsible and making decisions as a group.
