This week was a bit crazy with the early dismissal and the rain day. Our schedule was turned upside down, but the students did a great job rolling with things!
In language arts, students began to meet in small groups of similar reading levels. Most groups are learning to read "yellow" books which follow a simple pattern. Here are some partners reading to one another.
Students are also learning to do some independent work. Right now we are keeping it simple with tracing our name on a dry erase page. Once students finish this job, they are allowed to go to a reading station.
In math, we continued to practice sorting objects. We also became very skilled at our new math app: ST Math and learned how to work in our math journals independently.
This week we had a special impromptu visitor: Police Officer Bertram was doing a walkthrough and decided to pop in and visit our class. He spoke with the students about how to be good citizens from a young age. One of our students was chosen as a special "deputy" of the day for showing great citizenship. He raised his hand before speaking every time Officer Bertram was in the room.
In unit study, we began to learn about the season of Fall. Students listed things they know about Fall and then created a fall tree.

In language arts we will be reading books by the author/illustrator Tomie DePaola. We will focus on mastering the power words: a, all, am. We will also continue to increase our stamina of independent reading and continue learning to draw and write in our journals.
In math we will complete our unit on sorting.
In unit study we will complete our fall unit.
