Week 2

What a great second week of school!  We focused on continuing to build on our routines and becoming more familiar with our classmates and classroom.

In language arts, we continued our independent reading routine.  On Thursday, we reached 7 minutes!  Students are focusing on pointing to words, saying words that match the picture and choosing a favorite page to share with their neighbor.  Here are some of my little smarties reading:

We have also been working on our writing skills.  The first step of "writing" is learning to draw a detailed picture.  Later we add scribbles/letters/sounds and words.  Here are some friends busily drawing and writing in their journals.

 In math, we learned about an exciting new math program in our county called ST Math.  ST stands for spatial-temporal, and this program is great at building those spatial reasoning skills at any level.  Here are some students learning their password and working on the introduction lessons:

 We also learned about our math tubs.  These are baskets of manipulatives that the students have so much fun playing with at first.  Eventually, they learn to sort them, make patterns with them, graph them, count them and much more!

 In unit study, we continued learning about good citizenship and how to be a great friend and classroom community member.  We put those skills to the test Friday afternoon when we split into groups and worked on a HARD puzzle in small groups.  We really had to communicate and help each other out.

Looking forward to next week...

In language arts, we will continue to read and write.  We will be learning about the author, Eric Carle.    We will also begin small group instruction on learning to read and phonological awareness.

In math we will continue to work on ST Math, and exploring math tubs.  We will also focus on continuing to sort objects different ways.

In unit study, we will learn about the season of Fall.
