A Picture-Filled Post

I have a bunch of pictures to share this week, so carve out a few minutes to read this week's post.  

This week got started with a bang!  Or a vrooom?  At 9:30 Monday morning, the whole school met in the cafeteria/gym for an assembly to kick off our new One Book/One School book. 

Mr. Goetz began by welcoming us....

 

Then our reading specialist, Mrs. Smith tried to help us make a prediction about what the title of the book might be.... The Mouse and the......?

 

Too bad!  She couldn't remember the name and she forgot the book on her desk.  She asked Mr. Goetz to run and get one for her, when.... 

 

A motorcycle delivered the book!  The Mouse and the Motorcycle!!

 In math this week we learned all about shapes!  We focused on four important shapes (circle, triangle, rectangle, square) and compared and contrasted them.  We also looked for examples in our everyday environment.  Here are some friends playing shape bingo to review:

In language arts this week, we focused on the letter Bb!  We also learned the sight words: be, back and by.  We read lots of books about Miss Bindergarten and her funny classroom and made connections to our own life! 

In unit study we began to learn about the season of Fall.  We went outside to see if we noticed some things that were changing, that clued us in to the season.  One thing we noticed right away was that the leaves were changing colors and some were falling off the tree:

We also saw that many of our classmates were wearing warmer clothes since the weather was getting cooler. 

 We also took our first field trip this week to see more signs of Fall firsthand.  We enjoyed our trip to the pumpkin patch so much!  For some of our friends it was the first time riding the school bus, but everyone thought it was neat to ride with their class!

When we arrived, we were greeted by many of our parents and grandparents.  We really enjoyed getting on the wagon for a hayride!

We even got to visit with some cows!

 

Ms. Deedee taught us about the crops her farm grows and what they are used for.  

 We got to play for a while. 

We jumped around in a huge trailer full of cotton!

 

And took a class picture in front of the oversized scarecrows.  (This was a lot harder than it looked!)

 Since we each got to pick a pumpkin to bring back with us on our trip, we have kept them in the classroom so we can do some investigating with them. 

 We thought it was really neat that no matter how heavy our pumpkins were, they still floated!!  Many of us predicted that they would sink. 

 Even if we pushed it down, it still rose to the top. 

We had such a fun week!  On Friday, I finished PALS testing with a substitute helping out in the morning.  She gave our class such a compliment on our behavior.  I really do have the best kindergarten class!  I am one lucky teacher!

Looking forward to next week......

In math we will be creating and answering questions about object graphs.  We will be using our pumpkins to make one on Monday morning, so they will be coming home Monday afternoon.

In language arts, we will be talking about the letter Ss.  We will be reading books by Lois Ehlert and continuing to make connections.  Instead of text to self connections, this week, we will be trying to make text to text connections.  We will also learn the sight words: can, at, she, saw.

In unit study, we will finish our unit on Fall, with a special emphasis on apples this week!  If possible, all students should bring in 3 apples (any type) by Tuesday to use for graphing, exploring and tasting.
