In unit study this week, we continued to learn about how to be a great school/classroom/community citizen. We had lots of opportunities to practice our great citizenship on the playground last week. This week, due to the rain, we were mostly confined to the blacktop. Here are some pictures of our first week on the playground.
In language arts this week, we read lots of song books like "Wheels on the Bus," "Puff the Magic Dragon," "Down by the Bay" and "Miss Mary Mack." One of the students showed me she knew how to do the hand clapping game that goes along with Miss Mary Mack and all of the students had so much fun trying to learn it with a neighbor. In language arts, we are also continuing our brief introduction to all of the letters of the alphabet, practicing the correct way to write our name, and learning to draw a great picture in our journal and write for sounds. Finally, we are learning all about our literacy stations so that we can start to do some independent learning activities next week.
In math this week, we learned all about sorting. We learned that we can sort objects in many ways such as:
*by size
*by shape
*by color
We used our math tubs (baskets of manipulatives) to try sorting ourselves. The students were so proud to have their picture taken! After I took the picture, I projected it onto wall with my LCD projector. The kids felt like movie stars! And it really encouraged the other students to show off their sorting skills!
Next week.....
In unit study we will be discussing position words. The main ones we will focus on are above/below, in front/behind, near/far and the hardest by far: LEFT/RIGHT.
In language arts we will be reading books by Eric Carle, talking about letters Ee, Vv, Pp, Cc, continuing to practice rhyme, and introducing literacy stations. We will also be beginning our "Student of the Day" portion of our language arts block. It is important that you help your child complete the time line project and bring it in on his/her day so that we can celebrate your child. We will be doing lots of activities with each child's first name.
In math we will be also be focusing on position words. However, in math the main focus will be above, below and next to. We will be using our math tubs to display our knowledge of position.
Looking forward to a great week!
