Week 4!

Another great week in Room 105!

In unit study, we finished our study of positional words.  The students really seem to have a good grasp of this information.  Many already knew most position words, but those who didn't learned quickly!

In language arts, we read lots of books by Tomie de Paola, continued to introduce letters and practice working in our journals and at literacy workstations.  Another big aspect of this week was learning our guided reading/small group routine.  This is one of the most important parts of the day, when I can really focus for 25 minutes on 3-6 students, and give them exactly what they need to be successful in language arts.  Here are some of our favorite activities from this week:

In math this week we learned all about patterns.  We made pattern bracelets, created patterns with the manipulatives in our math tubs and had lots of fun acting out "sound patterns" such as clap,stomp,clap,stomp...

Next week:

In unit study we will be learning about the signs of Fall, and then investigating pumpkins (perfect timing for our field trip).

In language arts we will be introducing the letters Ll,Uu,Xx,Ff, reading opposite books and continuing to practice rhyme.

In math we will be beginning a unit on number sense and counting.  I am also working on assessing all students in their counting abilities so that we are able to begin small groups during math time as well.
