Week 3

Although we have still yet to have a full week of school (we had an early dismissal on Wednesday), the students are really starting to get into the swing of things. 

In unit study we learned all about the position words: above, below, left, right, in front, behind and near far.  To help us remember the right from left, we made special "right hand bracelets" that we wore for the rest of the day.  The students really enjoyed this.  I have a lot of hands on learners!

 On Friday, we read the book "What Game Shall We Play Today?"  by Pat Hutchins.  In the story, the animals are playing hide and seek, and lots of position words are used.  Next, we went to the playground and acted out our own position words.  Next week, we will turn the pictures into a class book.

In language arts, we read books by Eric Carle, introduced some of the letters of the alphabet, began introducing small group learning with Mrs. Dickinson and Mrs. White, and added Student of the Day names to the word wall.

In math, we learned about more position words, introduced our math journals and continued to use math tubs. 

Next week....

In unit study, we will use our new knowledge of position words to do lots of different activities.

In language arts, we will read books by Tomie de Paola.  We will introduce four new letters of the alphabet, continue our Student of the Day routine, and continue to practice drawing and labeling for our writing journals.

In math, we will be learning all about patterns!  Some students discovered last week that they could already make patterns with their math tubs.  They were so excited when I told them that is what we will be learning about next.
