Week 11

This week, in unit study we learned about past/present and the First Thanksgiving.  The students had a great time "acting out" the first Thanksgiving.  We had a king, some Pilgrims and Indians.  Since it's hard for 5 and 6 year old to fathom something that happened long before they were born, this sometimes helps them understand a little better.  Plus, I think we have some future actors/actresses in our midst!

In language arts, we focused on the letter Cc.  We learned the words: cat, come, can.  We read books by the Author oreen Cronin such as....




We also finished learning about making connections.  The students are experts at this now!!  In language arts this week we also learned how to glue our sorts into our word study notebooks.  Although we've been sorting for a while now, this is the ultimate test to see if we "really" know how to sort pictures by rhyme or beginning sound.  Here are some students doing a great job:


  
Side note: some students did have trouble doing this without help.  With nightly (and daily) practice, this should become really easy for your child and the Friday gluing into our word study notebook should take no time at all.  For more instructions on sorting, please see the homework tab at the top of the page.  

In math, we continued our tricky fractions unit by making sure we understood how to share a whole object and a set of object fairly with one, two or more people.  Here are some students showing their fair shares:

 

 In our math small groups we played lots of games to improve our understanding of numbers.  Here are some girls showing off their "bunny ears."  (I say a number and the goal is to have them show me the number with their fingers without counting them...automatic number representation):

In unit study we will be finishing our Thanksgiving unit.

In language arts, we will focus on the letter Ee and learn the sight words: he, me, be, we.  We will be reading books about Bear by the author Karma Wilson including the very timely Bear Says Thanks.  We will also begin to learn how good readers make predictions before they read and while they read.

In math, we will learn about halves and fourths.
