Week 4

 We had another great week in Room 105!  I'm so very proud of my smart students and their progress this far.

In language arts, we read books by the author Tomie dePaola.  As we read, we continued to discuss what authors and illustrators do, who characters are, what the setting is, and the problem/solution of the story.  The students are getting to be great thinkers and sharers!

Every day, we have a morning message.  This builds students fluency as we practice reading it.  We also do things like counting the number of words, circling certain letters and power words.  Sometimes there is a question that we talk to our partners about.  Here is our morning message helper doing a great job tracking the words as we read them together.



In small groups, some of us are practicing rhyming.  Here we are playing a matching rhyming word game.

In math, we finished up our sorting unit.  The students are great at sorting by color and shape!  When it comes to size, we will be working to make sure we understand this in our small groups.  Several students have trouble with this concept.

In small groups, we used the rekenreks to build our number sense fluency.  Students learned how the rekenreks worked and then practiced showing me various numbers.  Some students are more comfortable counting each bead while others can show my with just one move.

 In unit study, we completed our fall unit.  One of the highlights of the week was making applesauce on Friday!  The students learned about cooking safety, then used plastic knives to cut apples into little pieces.  We cooked the apples all day in a crockpot (it smelled so good!) along with cinnamon and sugar.  Next, we mashed them up.  We had applesauce ready to eat when we got back from our coding class.  Yum!

In language arts, we will be reading books by the author/illustrator Kevin Henkes.  As we read we will continue to practice summarizing by talking about the story elements (characters, setting, events).

In math, we will be learning about different types of patterns.

In unit study we will begin our unit about the five senses.
